Potential free-agent targets:
Martin Brodeur; goalie; longtime Devil proved that 40 is today's 30 after another outstanding playoff run; would serve as nice mentor and bridge to Markstrom era.
Zach Parise; left wing; another Devil likely to stay in Newark; 30-goal scorer who does it all is in prime of career and worth a long-term investment.
Derek Whitmore; left wing; under-the-radar affordable winger played for Panthers coach Kevin Dineen in Portland and has successive seasons there with 25-plus goals.
P.A. Parenteau; right wing; hidden gem on Long Island; 29-year-old notched 67 points, including six power-play goals, and wouldn't break the bank.
Alexander Semin; right wing; enigmatic Russian, 28, with six 20-plus goal seasons, including 40 in 2009-10, could bolster Panthers' 27th-ranked offense.
Mikael Samuelsson; right wing; a physical specimen at 35, coveted by Dineen after supplying leadership, toughness and playmaking expertise on the power play.
Jiri Hudler; center; crafty 28-year-old with championship DNA coming off 25-goal, 25-point season would bolster Panthers in the middle on power play, but not known for faceoff prowess.
Ryan Suter; defenseman; shut-down blueliner and favorite of Santos when in Nashville together, coming off career-high 46-point season and plus-15; would fit well on any team, especially if the Panthers can't re-up Garrison.
